Terra Australis

Discover Australia’s Rarest Wildlife at Wilhelma Zoo

Terra Australis invites you into a beautifully recreated slice of the Australian continent. Surrounded by eucalyptus trees and natural wooden structures, visitors can spot koalas, tree-dwelling kangaroos, and the rare quokka—found only in Stuttgart across all of Europe.

Originally opened in 1973, the building was completely modernized 50 years later with a strong focus on sustainability, natural daylight, and climate control via rainwater collection. The result is an immersive contrast between bright greenhouse areas and dim, moonlit zones for nocturnal creatures.

Themed around marsupials, Terra Australis is home to 11 unique species rarely seen in Europe, such as the spotted quoll and short-headed glider. Visitors can also learn about the fascinating birth cycle of marsupials—tiny offspring born underdeveloped, growing safely in the mother’s pouch or skin fold for weeks or months.
